Sandy O'Brien is a full-time Mom who is a full-time artist as well. She was born Sandy Fossett in Atlanta, GA and grew up in neighboring Decatur. She studied art history at Davidson College but did not immediately pursue a career in that field - instead signing on as a flight attendant for Delta Air Lines for 11 years. During that time, she traveled the world and met her husband-to-be Miles O'Brien, then a TV reporter in Boston.
Sandy returned home when Miles was offered a job at CNN in 1992. They spent thirteen years there and during that time welcomed their two children into the world. They spent a lot of time and energy investing and improving real estate. They bought, renovated and sold several houses and owned and managed dozens of apartment units. Sandy channeled her creative energy into those projects but did not pursue other artistic avenues until Miles was transferred to New York City.
She took workshops with R & F Paints in Kingston, NY where she learned the joy of the encaustic medium. She's been working entirely in that medium for over a year now.
Sandy and her family live in Manhattan with their two hound-dog mutts. She works in a converted nineteenth century carpet mill in Yonkers.
