Encaustic painting is an ancient art form that dates back to the first century.
The Egyptians used the technique to paint portraits of the dead which were inserted into their mummified remains.
The encaustic technique has not changed since then. Encaustic painters begin with a smooth wood surface and then add layers of beeswax mixed with pigment.
Metal tools and brushes are used to manipulate the wax as it is applied. A heat gun allows the artist to make changes later. In addition, other objects can be encased or embedded in the wax. The finished product has many layers and the texture of marzipan. |
